Silk Leis
Silk Leis represent the spirit of Aloha, the Hawaiian word for welcome and love. The popular Silk Leis in Hawaii are Hibiscus Leis, Orchid Leis, Plumeria Leis, Carnation Leis and Kukui Nut Leis. These are all natural flowers and plants that thrive in the climate of Hawaii.
Hawaiian Leis were not always sentimental or ornamental symbols, they originally began with a superstitious purpose. Hundreds of years ago Leis were offerings to the gods to influence the events of one's life – such as a bountiful fishing trip or the wellness of a family member. The flowers and nuts on the leis were often strung with needles made of blades of grass from the Nuuanu Valley on strands of banana tree bark as the string.
Modern Hawaiian leis also focus on natural flowers and plants but they are very expensive to make. Today, the majority of leis are not natural at all and are not made in Hawaii. The Silk Leis are made in southeast Asia with synthetic silk like flower petals strung across pieces of string. Even so, the spirit of Aloha still remains with Silk Leis – even if the fragrance and form may be different.
